Boerne, Texas is an incredibly special town located just northwest of San Antonio. It is a great spot to visit if you’re looking to get out of the city and experience the charm of a small Texas town.  The main street is referred to as the Hill Country Mile and features an array of boutique shops featuring clothing, home decor, and other treasures, as well as restaurants.  However, many of our favorite destinations were just outside of the main street, tucked into the Hill Country.  Below I will share our two-day trip itinerary and highlights of all of the spots we visited on our recent trip!

The Bevy Hotel:

This property is owned by Hilton, but they put their own little spin on the hotel with rustic hill country vibes that really imitate the town vibes.  The pool is surrounded by beautiful greenery and the bar/lounge is currently featuring live music on weekends for guests and locals.

Salty and Sweet:

This family-owned joint features handmade ice cream and pretzels.  Both are phenomenal.  The couple who opened Sweet and Salty moved to Boerne from Philadelphia and you can tell the entire family has a love for food.  Their daughters frequently lend a helping hand inside the shop.

Little Gretel:

A visit to this restaurant will have you feel like you’ve transported into central Europe.  They are known for their Czech Kolaches and Schnitzel.  We had breakfast here and tried the Hansel Kisses for something sweet with meringue filled with coffee cream and rolled in roasted almonds.

Shopping Hill Country Mile:

We shopped at an array of stores along the Hill Country Mile.  A few of my favorites for shops that we visited were: Texas Gourmet Pantry, Flashback Funtiques, Ella Blue, and The Christmas Store!

Compadres Hill Country Cocina: This business actually opened as a result of the pandemic by a popular chef who was let go from his corporate position.  He started selling his famous salsas and opened Compadres with just a few hundred dollars.  The spot has become extremely popular and serves tacos, nachos, and tortas with smoked meats.

Saint Tryphon Farm & Vineyard:

We visited Saint Tryphon for a private tasting on our trip, as wineries in Texas are currently closed. The vineyard was extremely impressive and the wines were just as fantastic. They are growing grapes that take well to the conditions in Texas and a portion of their grapes are grown on farm-share land in Lubbock, Texas.  Silouan started the business as a family-owned winery with his wife and daughter. They actually lived on the property for the first couple of years, up until the tasting room had enough traffic to justify moving away. The house on-site is now rented out to guests on Airbnb.

Cypress Grille:

Cypress Grille focuses on fine dining with a farm-to-table motto.  In fact, many of the produce you see on the menu is grown in their very own patio garden. You’ll find a selection of fine wines, seafood dishes [sea scallops and ahi tuna], and wood-fired steaks. Kevin Babbitt is the executive chef and Paul Thompson is the owner, chef and sommelier.

Black Rifle Coffee:

This Veteran owned coffee shop is a part of a larger brand known and Black Rifle Coffee which boasts over 1.3 million followers on Instagram.  The Boerne shop is their first Brick and Mortar location in Texas.  The coffee quality is top-notch and they office free coffee to service members, such as police officers and paramedics.

Cave Without A Name:

The cave was discovered in the 1930s by a group of children who stumbled upon the sinkhole that led below.  It opened commercially to the public in 1939.  The cave is massive and features six large rooms with a water canal flowing through it. Researchers from The University of Texas are actively studying several formations inside the cave. The pictures really don’t do it justice, so you should definitely visit for yourself to really get the feel for how grandiose this place really is!  Tours are hosted daily from 9am-5pm and reservations are suggested due to capacity limits.

Richter Tavern:

Richter Tavern opened recently in an industrial-style building with a 1920s bar.  It is located on the second floor with a huge outdoor patio with views to below. The menu features handmade pasta with san marzanos, lettuce wraps, salads, burgers, and sandwiches.
