Long hot Summers call for delicious milkshakes, and we are telling you where to find the best shakes in all of Austin. Enjoy your shake with a burger or a movie, or visit a local food truck. We even have options for vegans on the list!
The Yard Milkshake Bar: Austin’s newest milkshake hotspot is located at The Domain and they are serving up some of the most decadent shakes in town. Guests can fill out a card with their size, ice cream flavor[s], toppings, specialty toppings, and the option to add a cookie dough scoop. A few favorites include the Birthday Cake Shake, the Cookie Monster, Pretty in Pink and The Unicorn. Yard Milkshake Bar originated in Gulf Shores, Alabama and is now in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, and Texas.
Nau’s Drug Store: Perhaps the OG milkshake of Austin, Nau’s is best known for its old-fashioned, classic chocolate shake. Nau’s opened in Clarksville in 1951, making it one of Austin’s oldest buildings left standing. The counter in the back also serves delicious burgers. You will feel like you’ve time-traveled back to the 50s [in the best way!]
Hopodddy Burger Bar: The Nutella Pretzel Shake here is one of the best milkshakes I have ever had. It is the perfect combo of sweet and salty that keeps you coming back for more. Pairs well with french fries. Plus Hopdoddy has seasonal specials, so check the menu regularly to see what is currently being featured.
Prohibition Creamery: Located in East Austin, Prohibition is Austin’s first boozy ice cream parlor. They serve ice cream, cocktail, milkshakes, and floats. Non-boozy milkshake flavors include salted caramel, candy bar, mocha, nutella, chocolate or vanilla. Boozy milkshake flavors include triple bourbon, bananas foster, Irish coffee, horchata, car bomb, grasshopper, and pricky pear slushie.
P.Terry’s Burger Stand: The laziest way to indulge in a milkshake is through the drive-thru window at P.Terry’s Burger Stand. Try the delicious cookies n cream shake if you love OREOs. Classic shakes include traditional vanilla, strawberry, and double chocolate and they also feature specialty shakes from Cookie Butter to Peppermint, for a limited time, throughout the year.
Alamo Drafthouse: If you are looking to pair your shake with a newly released film, well then Drafthouse is your spot. The award-winning, adult-shakes are delicious and feature different types of alcohol from Bailey’s Irish Cream to Pecan Porter to Reposado Tequila. Drafthouse changes their menus regularly and does special feature menus for popular films so check back for more options.
Holy Cacao: The frozen hot chocolate at Holy Cacao’s south Austin food truck is one of the best desserts I’ve had in Austin hands down. It has been nationally recognized and comes highly recommended. There is a vegan and gluten-free option too for your dietary needs. They are a truck and a small business, so hours can vary. Check their Facebook or Instagram for updates.
Milky Way Shakes: This vegan milkshake truck is located at Spider House. Every shake on the menu is vegan and made of a special ice cream blend with coconut and almond milk. Plus you can order your shake with glittery strawberries and edible flowers. Shake specials change twice a month, so keep an eye on their Instagram page for updates.
